We Lost An Athlete, But They Lost Much More
Posted: November 30, 2007
The
death of Sean Taylor was both shocking and tragic. I was reluctant to
write a story on his passing because I do not feel that we should
exploit the passing of anyone in the media. I understand that we all
take an interest in the lives of celebrities and athletes, but at some
point we must all realize that they (and those around them) are just
like you and I.
I decided to briefly write about the death of
Sean Taylor to send my condolences and to put what occurred into
perspective. A 24-year-old man lost his life. I do not care about
what some see as an unruly past, nor do I care to speculate about what
he may or may not have had going on in his personal, but I care about
the fact that his loved ones have to figure out how to deal with their
lost and move on.

For
the rest of the world this will be old news in a week or so if no new
evidence surfaces. For Taylor’s parents, girlfriend, and child, this
will be something that they must deal with everyday. Speculations made
in the media by those who have never spent an hour with the man are, in
a word, tacky.
The attention that celebrities and many
athletes receive comes along with the job, but their loved ones never
sign up for that, they are forced to deal with it. They deal because
celebrity or not they love that person smile as they are forced to deal
with things that are not in their job description. Many of you reading
this know my close connection to football and the behind the scenes
action that most people do not see and cannot fathom. Maybe, it is for
that reason that I am writing this. As a football fan, yes, we lost a
great athlete in the passing of Sean Taylor, but I see the bigger
picture. I see a child, father, lover, teammate, and friend that was
lost when Taylor passed. I see that there are loved ones left behind
who need to grieve.
Our condolences go out to those loved ones and it is with deep regrets that such a tragic incident occurred to such a great MAN.
