Hero Or Villain?
June 24, 2008
When
most of us think of a cowboy, we think of a macho man living out west,
riding a horse, wearing denim, a gallon hat, boots and spurs. Cowboys
are thought of as chivalrous, romantic, heroes by most of us, but some
view cowboys in a negative light. Think of TIME Magazine’s cover that
described President George W. Bush’s foreign policy as “Cowboy
Diplomacy.” One of the definitions that dictionary.com gives for a
cowboy is, “a reckless or irresponsible person, especially a show-off
or one who undertakes a dangerous or sensitive task heedlessly.”
Now,
of the two different ideas of a cowboy, which category does Adam Jones
(formerly known as Pacman) fall under? The old Pacman may have been
considered reckless, but will the new Adam prove to be a hero for the
Dallas Cowboys? Well, we do realize that the Cowboys are hoping that
he will be if Roger Goodell reinstates Jones before the start of the
regular season.
The Cowboys may be taking a play from the
playbook of the Raiders during the ‘70’s and 80’s where they sign the
players who are considered by many to be “bad boys.” Keep in mind that
the Raiders did win three Super Bowls in the 70’s and 80’s and have won
zero since that time. If A. Jones and Tank Johnson are considered “bad
boys,” but they help the Cowboys get to the next level, then Jerry
Jones knows exactly what he is doing. I’m sure that J. Jones also
realizes that these guys will not be a distraction and may possibly
work harder because this could be their last chance in the league.
A.
Jones and Johnson showed that they are up for the challenge during OTAs
and mini camps. They seem to have a renewed work ethic and appear to
be in great shape. We all remember watching A. Jones when he was with
the Titans. Not only was he able to read where the quarterback was
throwing, but when he got the ball in his hands, he was a big play
maker. So, as a corner A. Jones showed signs of greatness, but what
about as a punt returner? He did not just show signs as a punt return
man; he was great. To simplify, let’s look at it this way: since the
2005 season, Devin Hester leads with seven punt returns for touchdowns
and guess who is in second place with four returns since 2005…A.
Jones. Keep in mind that A. Jones is in second place and missed an
entire season.
If A. Jones can stay out of trouble, I predict
that he will no longer be viewed as a reckless, irresponsible,
villainous cowboy, but will instead become a hero to assist the Dallas
Cowboys in riding off into the sunset in Tampa, Florida in February of
2009.
